Vickers Vimy Exhibition

Adelaide Airport, South Australia

__________

The Vickers Vimy Exhibition was a passion project for all concerned given its 100 year plus history.

The aircraft was languishing in the back lots of the Adelaide Airport precinct and as part of it’s 100 year anniversary it’s re-location to the new terminal expansion was timely to commemorate the aircraft and it’s crew.

From the outset, the project team came to learn & love the story of the aircraft and its crew including Adelaide brothers Sir Ross & Sir Keith Smith and the historical importance of the Vimy as a highly significant and formative aircraft of national significance.

Belying the scale & budget of the project the requirements were tremendously intricate and complex involving micro-planning for the aircraft’s dismantling, transportation and re-assembly into it’s new home in the heart of the new terminal precinct.

The new space was a state-of-the-art immersive exhibition and education experience.

Baukultur’s involvement with the project commenced by identifying the Vickers Vimy as a key centrepiece to the expanded airport terminal. It involved various studies of locations, feasibility and spatial explorations. During this time it included working alongside AAL to seek state & federal funding for the project that we know today.

Subsequently, Baukultur were appointed as lead designers to define the immersive visitor experience in conjunction with an expert project team that included exhibition designers Arketype, specialist conservator ArtLab, curator David Crotty, and other specialised exhibition content designers and engineers.

Working closely with key stakeholders including descendents of the crew, the History Trust of South Australia, the South Australian Aviation Museum, the South Australian Tourism Commission, influential media personalities and Adelaide Airport Limited, Baukultur navigated never-before-seen project requirements and design challenges to deliver a high quality & truly unique visitor experience coupled with best practice conservation initiatives.
