The redevelopment of the state and federally heritage listed General Post Office precinct in Adelaide, South Australia brings new life into one of central Adelaide’s most historically important areas.
What was once a thriving communications hub and Australia’s telecommunications connection with the rest of the globe has been reshaped into a new commercial and hospitality precinct.
Extensive research by the Hassell + Fitzpatrick and Partners design team, led by former Hassell (now Baukultur) Principal David Homburg and designer Gabrielle Seymour, in to the area’s history and its laneways and connection revealed a wealth of potential for a vibrant, connected and culturally rich precinct. This sensitive approach to such a historically significant precinct enabled development approvals to be obtained from both state and federal authorities with minimal reworking of the initial proposals.
The development is being delivered in two stages for two clients – the recently completed GPO Exchange office building for Charter Hall, and a new 285 guest room 5 Star Westin Hotel for Greaton Development that will shortly commence construction.
