Adelaide Airport Terminal Expansion

__________

The redevelopment of the Adelaide Airport Terminal 1 began in 2015 with Hassell as lead consultants for a major expansion at the northern end that added new floor areas and six new gates. The vision was led by former Hassell (now Baukultur) Principal Mariano De Duonni in conjunction with Hassell aviation sector leader Mark Wolfe.

A rethink of the project enabled greater efficiencies to be achieved by having the gate expansion deferred to a later stage – bringing them into operation when they are actually required. This new Tex scheme will open at the end of  2021.

Design thinking and insight transformed what began as a commission for the upgrade of the international Departures/Arrivals and associated baggage belts into a fully integrated expansion of retail outlets, gate lounges, duty free, airline lounges and new office accommodation for associated agencies working within the Terminal.

One of many highlights is the innovative reuse of the closed elevated road as a landscape link between the hotel and the airport – it is a cohesive, integrated precinct enhancing the customer experience. Others include a sophisticated façade that meets stringent performance criteria including acoustics, bomb blast, maintenance, thermal and glare control, in a simple, shear façade system.
